A POLICE Internal Affairs investigation is under way following the shooting of a man in Mandurah on Saturday evening.
Local officers were called to a home on Myerick Street about 7pm.
They were responding to reports of a man armed with a gun.
Police allege as officers approached the house, a 65-year-old man exited the front door carrying what appeared to be a rifle.
The man was repeatedly ordered to drop the rifle, but he failed to comply and pointed the gun towards police.
Police then shot the man, resulting in a single gunshot wound to his upper left thigh.
The man was taken to Peel Health Campus for treatment to the non life-threatening injury.
The man is understood to have lived at the address with his wife, who was not injured.
Neighbours said they heard the gunshot but were unaware of the preceding incident prompting police attendance.
Forensics officers arrived at the scene about 11pm, with the area around the property cordoned off and a section of the street closed while they conducted their investigation.
Coinciding with standard police procedure, Internal Affairs officers are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
