THE South West Football League 2014 season came to a conclusion on Sunday as the Eaton Boomers claimed back-to-back flags after pulling of an upset against South Bunbury.
The Boomers went into the game as underdogs but they never took a backwards step, exposing South Bunbury in nearly every area of the ground on their way to a 25 point victory.
Eaton began the game moving the ball with their electric pace and South Bunbury couldn’t keep up.
Regular culprits like Josh Bowe and Michael Battaglia were dominating the midfield battle while Chris Atthowe was damaging in every aspect.
Kieran Butcher and Will Oelsnik kicked the first two goals for Eaton before South Bunbury’s Adam Hunter snuck a late one in to close the gap to 10 points at quarter time.
The second quarter mirrored the first with Eaton kicking two goals before Hunter could peg one back for the Boomers.
Atthowe’s work around the ground was rewarded with his first of two goals coming in the second while Matt Buchanan also converted for the Boomers.
Eaton went into the main break leading by 15 points.
The beginning of the second half saw the conditions starting to have more of an effect on tired players.
South Bunbury looked to be more desperate than their first half showed but their efforts were being nullified by Eaton’s rebound game.
Leigh Kohlmann kicked the first for South Bunbury but Eaton would boot the next two through Jye Cormack and Brendan Page.
Eaton was winning most matchups around the ground.
Page was overcoming Wes Lammie in the ruck, Jake Ferrier was too much for Adam Harper to handle and William Barnes was on top of South Bunbury’s Brynn Francis.
However Hunter would kick truly once again nearing the end of the quarter to keep South Bunbury in the game as the Tigers headed into the last break trailing by seven points.
Unfortunately for the Tigers the fourth quarter was all about the Boomers.
Eaton kicked four goals to one in the final term to finish the game 10.9.69 to 6.8.44 victors.
Atthowe was awarded the Pike medal for his best on ground performance.
