The life and times of sports broadcaster George Grljusich who brought world sport, and pacing at Gloucester Park and Richmond Raceway, to listeners across country WA over his 36 years on the ABC has been captured in a new book.
Dubbed as a broadcasting genius by many of his peers Grljusich drew big crowds as he toured country towns across the South West as part of a sporting road show for many years helping scores of country clubs to raise much needed finance.
The 300-page book has been written by the former public relations manager of the South West Development Authority, Baden Pratt, who has captured the highs and lows of Grljusich’s career in the book, George! The Life and Riotous Times of George Grljusich.
The book has been a great success and has almost sold out.
Pratt said the task of writing about George’s life was his toughest assignment in 50 years of journalism.
“I now know George as a most complex character, on the one hand a broadcasting genius, on the other a shell of a man hiding in his market garden from creditors, lawyers and others,” Mr Pratt said.
“George has taken me on a roller-coaster ride over almost five years but I am pleased it is finished.
A free copy of The Life and Riotous Times of George Grljusich will be given to next week’s Letter of the Week winner.
