Bali: Indonesia's Attorney-General hopes there won't be many more batches of executions in Indonesia this year, following the killing of five foreigners and an Indonesian on Sunday for drug crimes.
His comments come as the Netherlands and Brazil recalled their ambassadors in Indonesia to protest against the execution of their citizens.
The decision to kill Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, the first Brazilian to be executed overseas, "gravely affects relations", said Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders called the execution of Ang Kiem Soei, who was sentenced to death for operating two ecstasy factories in Tangerang, an "unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity".
Indonesian Attorney-General H.M. Prasetyo told reporters he hoped there would not be many batches of executions this year as they "give us headaches".
He said it was up to President Joko Widodo to decide on the timing of the second batch of executions after receiving recommendations from his advisers.
"Convicts who have exhausted their legal avenues will be executed," he said at a press conference on Sunday.
Bali Nine ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan could be among the second group of drug felons to be executed if Chan's plea for clemency is rejected.
The Indonesian government has indicated it would execute the two together because they committed the same crime.
Lasr month, Mr Joko said he was not inclined to grant clemency to any of the 64 (now 58) drug convicts on death row.
Mr Prasetyo acknowledged there had been a diplomatic backlash from countries whose citizens were executed, but said this was part of their responsibility to protect their citizens.
"We will do the same," he said. "However in the end they will respect our legal system.
"Execution is not a fun thing, it is a matter of deep concern, but we have to carry it out because the law must be upheld," Mr Prasetyo said.
He said the killings, carried out by firing squads, reflected Indonesia's strong stance against the spread of drugs.
"We will not compromise with drug syndicates and drug dealers," he warned.
Mr Prasetyo said the executions had proceeded smoothly, although they had not all been held exactly at midnight as planned, for reasons including the weather.
"The convicts died instantly but doctors waited about 10 minutes before examining the bodies to confirm the death," he said.
Those executed also included Vietnamese woman Tran Thi Bich Hanh, Indonesian woman Rani Andriani, Daniel Enemuo from Nigeria and Namaona Denis from Malawi.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said Australia will make "the strongest possible representations" on behalf of Sukumaran and Chan but would not jeopardise its relationship with Indonesia.
