IN a bid to lower the number of stolen number plates in the South West, local police and Bunnings Bunbury have teamed up to help the public.
On Saturday, customers at the store will be able to have the screws on their car’s plate changed to anti-theft screws which have proved successful in Perth and other states.
South West crime prevention officer Senior Constable Steph Smith said offenders used stolen number plates to avoid identification when committing serious offences such as burglary.
“It is very important to protect number plates and to lower the amount being stolen which will hopefully help to see a fall in the rates of other crimes,” Senior Constable Smith said.
“It is the whole community’s job to help lower the crime rate and this is a great step towards that goal.”
Running between 10am and 2pm, customers can make the swap free of charge provided the car is registered and they have a valid driver’s licence.
Bunnings Warehouse Bunbury activity organiser Karen Giles said the event was a great chance to provide a helpful community service with up to 400 people expected to participate during the day.
Members of the Roadwise committee and Neighbourhood Watch will also be available on the day.
