A BUSINESS application to the City of Busselton will see seven trucks a day carrying sand along Caves Road if approved.
J and P Coleman have made an application to excavate Lot 61 Caves Road which also backs from Vidler Road just outside Dunsborough.
The company are asking for a 20 year approval.
The application shows that the pit would be five to 10 metres deep and intervening trees and vegetation will block the pit from being seen from Caves Road.
The company estimates there will be 50,000 tonnes of sand will be produced annually.
This will result in seven truck movements per day with a 25 tonne average load.
As part of the application J and Coleman state that sand was valuable resource for the community and the local area was known for its active sand pits.
Dunsborough resident Nicola Hayes wrote into the Busselton Dunsborough Mail concerned about the application.
“If this proposal goes ahead it will mean a huge amount of heavy traffic along Caves Road,” she said.
“Apart from the danger and congestion it will cause on the roads there will be a lot of truck noise as they accelerate and decelerate along Caves Road especially if they are travelling past Dunsborough town.”
However, Main Roads WA spokesperson Dean Roberts said they were not concerned with the “relatively small increase in truck traffic”.
Mr Roberts said the section along Caves Road in question carried more than 4000 vehicles per day.
“The widening of the seven kilometre section of Caves Road between Dunsborough and Yallingup commenced in 2013/14 with three kilometres completed and the remaining four kilometres including the intersection of Vidler Road is planned for 2015/16,” he said.
The application is open for public comment until February 27.
Mr Roberts said Main Roads would be making a submission to the city on the application.
