WITH the fly in fly out work ingrained in WA’s culture, author Georgina Penney’s new book hits the nail on the head.
Her book is titled Fly In Fly Out and looks at how a female engineer balances work, relationships while running away from family problems.
“It’s the basis of FIFO life,” she said.
Penney was inspired to write the book after a friend of hers, who was a FIFO woman challenged her.
“I was amazed by how many women came forward with their stories,” she said.
Penney does have one story which stood out to her.
“There was one woman who was at work, about to finish her shift when things went wrong,” she said.
“She was forced to stay on and she called her long time partner to let him know what was happening and when she returned he had packed up his things and left.”
Penney is excited to come back to where she grew up and essentially talk about a book which is largely based in the area.
“I tried to base the story on the east coast but I kept finding myself back here in Busselton and Margaret River,” she said.
Penney will be talking about her book at Laundry 43 on February 25 10.30am.
