The state government has announced a multi-million dollar redevelopment for East Perth.
Planning Minister John Day said the plan to transform the old Chemistry Centre site at 101 Hay Street would create 250 jobs and represented an investment of $160 million by local developer Diploma Properties.
The plan is to turn the 1942 building into a mixed-use development with more than 200 apartments, restaurants and shops.
The proposal includes a 16-storey apartment tower and roof-top "sky-gardens" offering views of neighbouring Queens Gardens.
Part of the redevelopment of the Material Sciences red-brick heritage building will be the creation of a "little eats street" with shops and restaurants along a laneway from Hay Street to De Vlamingh Avenue.
Diploma Properties is trying to line up a major supermarket retailer for the main 1500sqm tenancy.
Construction is due to start next year.
"The government went to the market looking for a supermarket that could service the hundreds of new residents living in East Perth and working in new office developments in the area," Mr Day said.
