IT isn’t every day that young swimmers have the opportunity to swim for their country, but on the weekend six members of the Busselton Swimming Club did just that.
Amy Kerr, Angus Johnston-Walker, Maddy Johnston-Walker, Jay Darnell, Cara Viljoen and Tessa Viljoen all met strict qualifying criteria to swim for Team Aussie at the Indian Ocean All Stars Challenge in Perth.
The team competed against athletes from Asia and the Busselton swimmers came back with an impressive 23 medals.
Maddy Johnston-Walker was dominant in the 11-12 years age division amassing a total of six gold and two silver medals. Maddy was named one of the top five swimmers of the meet and is now ranked in the top five in the state for three events, including the 100m butterfly.
Cara Viljoen was also impressive bringing home three gold, four silver and one bronze. The Viljoen sisters were very hard to beat in their age group with Tessa Viljoen also picking up three silver and two bronze medals.
Jay Darnell and amy Kerr fought a little harder for their medals and received a bronze medal each.
They were both able to make a new personal best time and elevate their rankings.
Angus Johnston-Walker swam three personal best times and climbed higher in the state rankings.
All of the swimmers were proud to be representing Team Aussie and the Club was pleased to see such promising results from its’ junior swimmers in the lead up to the Junior State Championships next weekend.
