THE mystery deepens surrounding the four wheel drive which ended in Geographe Bay after a car plunged into the water at speed on Monday evening, April 18.
Last week, early morning walkers were shocked to find a car submerged and abandoned in the water on the Busselton foreshore.
A person who witnessed the event unfold and wanted to to remain anonymous, said he was fishing at the Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue Group’s boat ramp when the car came screeching towards him.
The witness said he had his own vehicle on the boat ramp with the lights on while he was fishing when the incident happened between 8.45pm and 9pm on the Monday night.
He said the car came screaming behind him on the boat ramp.
“It was doing speed and coming straight for me,” he said.
“I thought it was going to hit me.
“It veered onto the beach and went into the water at speed.
“It must have been doing 30 kilometers an hour when it hit the water.
“It was about one kilometer down the beach from where the car ended up.”
The witness said his initial reaction was to help but the vehicle took a sharp left in the water and continued driving down the bay while it was submerged.
“The water was over the bonnet, it was close enough to head height,” he said.
The witness jumped in his car to follow but ended up in the wrong car park and by the time he made it to the foreshore the person or people were gone.
“The car horn was going they must have stuffed up the electrics by the look of it,” he said.
On Tuesday morning City of Busselton workers arranged for the vehicle to be towed out of the bay and 4wdrescue used their International Harvester truck from the Vietnam War era to pull the vehicle from the water.
The vehicle was not reported stolen to police and no charges have been laid.
A City of Busselton spokesperson said the owner of the car was known to rangers but contact had not been made at the time it was impounded.
