Men’s
BUSSELTON City Football Club premier men’s team won their final bout of the season against Eaton-Dardanup over the weekend.
The side faced Eaton away in their last display of dominance on the pitch for the season, taking the win three nil.
The game showcased Busselton’s strike power through Mike Newell, Mitchell Monck and attacking utility Mathis Wieler whose passing game troubled Eaton from the whistle.
Wieler drew first blood as he took on Eaton’s keeper in a solo stand off and slotted a volley high to put Busselton’s first goal on the scoreboard.
Busselton looked dangerous throughout the rest of the half but failed to capitalise on scoring further opportunities.
The second half followed in much the same way with the Busselton outfit playing a strong passing game through mid field stalwart’s Shane Russell and Michael Siea giving the forwards plenty of chances.
Busselton’s second goal game off a deflection from Wieler, followed with tenacity from Monck who wasted no time putting the ball in the net the second time round.
Young defender Cameron Best worked hard to feed quality through balls down the wing and compressed any breaks from Eaton’s attackers, backed by goal keeper Conor Poleykett whose solid form maintained Busselton’s clean sheet.
A late break from Monck followed by swift pass in the penalty box saw Wieler volley his second goal of the game into the back of the net with 10 minutes on the clock.
The South West soccer season has now drawn to a close, with mix of new and youth players stepping up, the Busselton side have finished their 2016 season campaign midway through the rankings.
Women’s
BUSSELTON City Football Club premier women’s team ended its season in third spot on the league ladder, wrapping up a transitional period for the club.
After a tough 90-minute tussle with Eaton-Dardanup in Bunbury on Sunday, the side could not do enough to take the win.
Eaton-Dardanup played a clinical brand of football from the whistle giving Busselton little chance to fall into a rhythm.
With a few key players missing, Busselton worked in overdrive to keep Eaton at bay through the middle of the pitch.
Busselton’s goal keeper, Marli Enslin was, for a second week in a row, critical in keeping the attacking side scoreless for the majority of the first half.
The dying minutes of the first half quickly turned sour for Busselton as Eaton managed to sneak their first goal through the clutches of Enslin, immediately followed by two more as their defences tired.
Busselton used half-time to regroup and came back onto the pitch looking to regain composure and tempo.
The side’s younger players lifted their game through the wing of Hannah Armstrong and Asha McClurg to pull off a strong passing game giving the side a number of striking opportunities that went unanswered up front.
Midfielder Kenzie Hamilton was in form through the middle of the pitch and worked hard to remove key attacking players from Eaton.
Busselton’s backline headed by Sami Noakes and Jannelle Snaddon kept Eaton scoreless throughout the second half, but without strike power on goal, the side could not claw back their three-goal deficit.
Busselton secured third place on the league ladder.
