A group of brave students, a few pairs of clippers, and a lot of generosity has led to a Sutherland Shire school raising over $100,000 for the World’s Greatest Shave.
Inaburra School, in Bangor, has broken the record for most money raised by a NSW school in the 19-year history of the event, with the previous record standing at $60,000.
The Christian school has been rallying behind one of its Year 12 students this year who is currently battling leukaemia.
Almost 30 students had their heads shaved or hair cut this afternoon to show their support.
The students, as well as others from the wider community involved in the same group, have raised the money for the Leukaemia Foundation – who run the World’s Greatest Shave each year.
“Towards the start of the year we all got together and thought this was a good way to support our good friend suffering from cancer,” Year 12 student Daniel Lilli said.
“So many people have got behind it and the support has been overwhelming.”
Daniel, 17, has raised the most money by an individual with over $22,000.
Fellow Year 12 student Luke Sammut, 17, said they had smashed their own expectations.
“At the beginning of the campaign we had a goal of raising $10,000 and then we aimed for $50,000,” he said.
“But in the past month it has really picked up. People are really getting on board with it.”
Another Year 12 student Whitney Sheffield said her good friend, who was currently undergoing treatment for leukemia, was overwhelmed by all the support for cancer research.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce, whose father was a barber, was also on hand to cut some hair and witness the shave today.
The school’s team, named ZNMOOR, was made up of mainly Year 12 students but also included younger students and other people from outside the school. The team included over 40 people in all who had their heads shaved or hair cut as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.
