Police Minister Michelle Roberts has requested information from WA Police as to the number of police suicides which have occurred in WA over the past decade.
Ms Roberts is seeking the information after WAtoday reported on the issue last week.
Last Wednesday WAtoday reported the WA Police Union was pushing for a national inquiry into the rate of police officers dying across Australia.
A recent spate of suicides among police officers nationally has prompted the move.
It's understood in recent weeks and months, several police officers, including those in Western Australia, have taken their own lives.
It's believed a WA officer took her own life in February, leaving behind a young son.
WA Police Union president George Tilbury described the recent case as tragic, adding: "I fear that unless we all address this issue openly in the public space, we could see more."
Mr Tilbury first flagged the need for a national inquiry into police suicides at a Police Federation of Australia Executive meeting several weeks ago.
"I strongly believe the issue of police suicide is peaking and a national inquiry is needed because these tragedies are occurring right across Australia," he said.
In response to questions from WAtoday, Ms Roberts said she was currently seeking information from Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan on the matter.
"Mr Tilbury has raised a very serious issue," Ms Roberts said.
"I am currently seeking information from the Commissioner of Police as to the number of police suicides in Western Australia over the past decade and how that compares to other state jurisdictions and also how it compares to the rate of suicide in the general community."
A federal police officer with more than 30 years experience is also among the cohort of officers to take their own life recently.
The respected officer took her own life inside the AFP's Melbourne office in February.
Days after her death Fairfax Media revealed the AFP scrapped a national welfare officer program several years ago, replacing it with an outsourced counselling hotline and a support unit based at the force's Canberra headquarters.
But a spokesperson for Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan said he had "full confidence in the AFP Commissioner to implement systems and protocols that recognise the seriousness of mental illness and to provide necessary support to affected members."
"The AFP has advised that its members are provided with extensive support services, and this is under constant review to ensure it meets the needs of its specialist workforce," the spokesperson said.
Blue Hope, a not for profit group whose aim is to highlight police officers' mental health issues, were in Perth recently to launch a new 24 hour helpline for WA officers.
Within the space of a fortnight, the helpline was called 77 times.
The 77 phone calls resulted in 53 engagements, such as physical meetings taking place and assistance provided.
A WA Police spokesman said last week the force "continued to raise awareness of mental health among its staff as well as reduce stigma around psychological challenges."
"This is achieved through integrating targeted training into management courses," the spokesman said.
"WA Police also acknowledges the potential impact on officers' families and is seeking to better understand their knowledge of the support services available to officers."
