Police were forced to divert their attention last night after a a 23-year-old man allegedly tailgated their marked car travelling south on the Vasse Highway.
At approximately 11.40pm, a gold coloured Holden Caprice sedan began tailgating the police car, as well as continuously flashing its high beams.
The car stopped abruptly and conducted a U-turn, with heavily acceleration causing smoke to come from the vehicle.
Police turned around and began following the car as it travelled north.
The car approached the intersection of Vasse Highway and Bussell Highway at speed and overshot the corner, causing the vehicle to spin and turn 180 degrees.
The vehicle was facing the wrong way down Bussell Highway.
The police activated their emergency lights and sirens as the Holden accelerated heavily and did a U-turn, mounting multiple curbs and causing the vehicle to fishtail down Bussell Highway in a westerly direction.
The car mounted the centre island, which caused some of the exhaust pipe brackets to break and the exhaust was left dragging behind the vehicle.
The car continued travelling on Bussell Highway and turned onto Country Road in Bovell, mounting a footpath and travelling for approximately 25 metres before stopping.
The driver was arrested by police without further incident. Police searched the vehicle and it will be alleged that a small amount of cannabis was located.
A man from Hithergreen has been charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, exceeding blood alcohol limit of 0.08 and possessing cannabis.
The man will appear at Busselton Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 23.
