Donnybrook Football club were in complete control of the round five game against the Busselton Magpies on Sunday afternoon at Sir Stewart Bovell Park.
The Mother’s Day match saw the wet and wild weather hold off for the first half of the game, thought the strong winds proved a challenge for both teams as well as spectators.
Donnybrook started strong, scoring the first goal early in the game, with the score sitting at 4.1 (25) to Busselton’s 0.3 by the end of the first quarter.
Busselton worked hard in their attempts to even the score but were no match for Donnybrook who scored a further five goals bringing the half time score to 9.3 (57) to 0.5.
Busselton Coach Steve Lester was disappointed with how the team played in the first half.
“As a collective we were all pretty flat in the first half, we didn’t take the opportunities we were given and as a result let the opposition get ahead,” he said.
The skies opened up during the second half, with strong rain, wind, thunder and lightening making for slippery conditions.
Jed Kemp proved to be Busselton’s strongest asset, scoring their first and only goal during the third quarter.
Lester was impressed with Kemp’s performance and thought he and Todd Wilson were the teams strongest players.
Kemp’s goal brought the score to 9.8 (62) to 1.9 (15).
However, the goal only seemed to further inspire Donnybrook, who scored again to win the match with a final score of 10.10 (70) to 1.11 (17).
“We definitely played better in the second half of the game, unfortunately we just weren’t able to even the score.”
The Magpies will head up to Hands Memorial Oval in Bunbury for the round six game against South Bunbury next Saturday, May 20.
Meanwhile, Donnybrook face off against Carey Park on Sunday, May 21.
Lester said the team just needed to bring the right attitude to next weekends game.
