Eleven-year-old old Ariel Weffer would like to be an actor when she's older, one who appears in film or theatre with a "really good moral" to the story.
And she has an unblinking analysis of the interviews with female actors who walk the red carpet.
"The girls get asked about what they are wearing and the boys usually get asked about their job. I would like them to ask me how it feels to be part of a movie or a play, and what it means to me."
It won't be until Ariel and her peers reaches retirement age that Australia might - optimistically - have reached pay parity for women and men, a key marker of gender equality.
But that doesn't mean girls, like Ariel, and young women aren't thinking about it.
When Australian girls are asked what change they want to see in the world, 50 per cent - unprompted - say gender equality, according to a survey of more than 1700 girls aged 10-17 by children's rights agency Plan International.
At all ages, in all places (such as home, school or playing sport), 95 per cent of girls surveyed said they are not treated equally to boys, the research found.
And their answers reveal a troubling decrease in confidence as young girls age and encounter sexist barriers that reduce their ambition.
One respondent said she would like to express her ideas in class without being interrupted and "Not to have the pressure of the social media influence on how my body looks."
Others wrote in a similar vein:
"Being able to speak about my opinion more openly".
"Girls can have babies and still become a Prime Minister."
"For adults to listen and not interrupt when they think they know what I am saying."
More than three-quarters of girls aged 10-14 agreed they had opportunities to become leaders, but this fell to about 55 per cent by early adulthood.
Ariel and her family friend, Alejandra Machillanda, also 11, both live in Melbourne and say boys and girls are treated equally at their schools, and gender is sometimes discussed.
But more broadly, if you don't stick to gender stereotypes it can be uncomfortable, said Ariel.
"They [other children] say if you like typical 'boy' sports you're a tomboy, or girl who likes boy stuff. It doesn't make you feel so good."
This survey aims - in a modest way - to address the worldwide dearth of research into the attitudes and experiences of girls.
For example, pregnancy stats on girls under 15 simply aren't collected in many countries, says Plan International deputy head Susanne Legena. The result is clumsy, ineffective policy.
The experiences of Australian girls mirror those of their peers overseas in many ways; when puberty starts girls realise their bodies are viewed as assets and emphasis is placed on their appearance, the research finds.
If anything negative happens in those years, girls are taught to question their role, says Legena. Did they protect themselves? Did they cover their bodies?
"The pace of gender equality seems glacial ... we need to get our skates on if if we want this to change in this generation."
After inequality, girls are most concerned with being scrutinised for the way they look, rather than their ability or talent. More than 90 per cent of girls aged 15 to 17 said it would be easier to "get ahead" if they were not judged on their appearance.
Schools should remove gendered school uniforms, sexist advertising and media should be banned, and the gender pay gap closed, the report recommends.
