Surf Life Saving WA helicopter daily patrols have been extended in the South West and the state’s metropolitan areas.

The state government has funded $350,000 to keep the chopper in the air until May 27.
Patrols commonly finish at the end of April, however, a bumper salmon run and the biggest mass whale stranding in 10 years are believed to be contributing to higher number of sightings of white sharks.
Fisheries minister Dave Kelly said the safety of people at the state’s beaches was paramount for the McGowan Government.
“That is why we have made this important decision to fund the extension of the Surf Life Saving WA aerial patrols,” he said.
“People are urged to heed all warnings and beach closures put in place by authorities.”
Patrols began on 2 September 2017, three weeks earlier than the year before.
Water users are urged to check SharkSmart’s shark activity map or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter before going into the water.
