Rangers have been posted on street corners collecting feedback to the proposal that sections of the city’s beach become dog exercise areas and sections become restricted during the summer months.
According to the city the proposed changes are to simplify the current dog exercise areas.
The city now hopes to introduce clear guidelines for dog owners and beachgoers alike, taking away some of the confusion that currently exists.
Manager of ranger and emergency services Tim Wall said changes had been proposed in order to meet the needs of all beach users especially during peak summer season.
“Our intention is to clear up any discrepancies as to where and when animals can be exercised off the leash.
“While some beach areas will have restricted use as dog exercise areas over summer, other areas will been opened up.
“Proposed new dog exercise areas include Churchill Park, Lou Weston Oval and Bovell Park during times when they are not being used by sporting groups or for community events and activities.
“Restricting the times people can exercise their dogs on some suburban beaches over the summer is common practice in many local government areas.
“These changes, if supported by council, will be implemented from December 1 to April 30,” Tim said.
“I would encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to review the proposed changes on the maps which are available at both libraries, local vet clinics and at the city’s administration building.”
