But aside from her many royal duties over the 70 years of her reign, the Queen was also known for her well-timed sense of humour.

She was seen on screen for more than seven decades. Here are a few of our favourite, lighter moments from the Queen's public life.

Welcoming the Olympics to London in 2012, in style, the Queen joined forces with James Bond actor Daniel Craig and filmmaker Danny Boyle to stage the ultimate entrance to the opening ceremony.

Over a six-minute film clip aired ahead of the ceremony, the Queen walks with famous fictional agent 007, as played by Craig, through Buckingham Palace (corgis in toe) to an awaiting helicopter.

After flying through the city streets (including a narrow cruise through the pillars of the London Tower Bridge), the duo arrives above the London stadium. Where they then parachute (no really!) into the awaiting applause of the gathered public.

Speaking later on Stephen Colbert's talk show in America, Craig described his time filming with the Queen, saying she was rather cheeky to him off-camera.

"She's very funny, she wanted to crack a joke, crack a joke at me," he said.

"She said, we were having our photographs taken and she said, 'oh no he's the one that doesn't smile'. Which, fair enough."

In 2014, the Queen visited the set of Game of Thrones while it was filming in Northern Ireland.

Though the then-88-year-old monarch admitted she had never watched the series, she was taken aback at least by the sight of the iconic sword-strewn throne.

Speaking to Graham Norton on the BBC, Jon Snow actor Kit Harrington said the royal had approached him to ask, "and what do you do on this production?"

Despite the crews' attempts to have the Queen sit on the throne, it was unfortunately disallowed by royal protocol.

Her team told the production staff, "she's not allowed to sit on other thrones, fictional or otherwise".

Didn't stop her from at least showing some excitement at the sight of it though. Albeit from a safe, royal distance.

Well-known as an animal lover, Queen Elizabeth II has held an audience with not one - but two bears!

In 2016, the Queen shared her 90th birthday with AA Milne's beloved children's book character, Winnie the Pooh.

To commemorate the occasion, a special release book was published, wherein Christopher Robin and his chummy little Pooh meet the Queen outside Buckingham Palace.

While celebrating her Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Queen hosted another much-beloved bear at the Palace, taking tea with Paddington.

The talking Peruvian bear even managed to reveal what the monarch keeps in her iconic handbag. A marmalade sandwich, of course.

During the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a photo taken by Hockeyroo teammate Jayde Taylor went viral after the Queen playfully snuck in behind!

The photo made headlines all over the world and brought in thousands of followers for the Aussie hockey player.

As CNN even suggested, the glee of it may even have boosted the women's confidence for their eventual win later in the games!

Ahead of the Invictus Games in 2016, the Queen joined her grandson Prince Harry in talking a bit of trash to then US president Barrack Obama, and first lady Michelle.

Via video message, the Obamas inform the royal family that their athletes are ready to drop the mic on Britain.

To which the Queen utters a polite and firm dismissive reply, "oh really, please." Mic dropped, Your Majesty.

While hosting a G7 luncheon in Cornwall, the Queen took to cutting the official cake with a ceremonial sword.

Kate Middleton and Camilla Parker-Bowles stand just to the side to avoid any sudden sword swishing. Camilla even offered to assist with pushing the blade through the thick icing.

Just to prove that when you're the longest-serving British monarch, you will do what you please, thank you very much.

"There's a knife there as well," a voice says off-camera while the Queen slices the tip of her sword into the icing.

"I know there is," she quips back, "This is something that is more unusual." Carry on, Your Majesty.

It might seem fit to expect that someone as powerful as the Queen of England could best hope to fill a room with only gracious, polite laughter.

Queen Elizabeth II, however, often managed to raise the room to rapturous laughter. One notable occasion was during the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta.

While introducing the sovereign, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau slightly insinuated that the aging queen might have been older than Canada itself.

"Thank you, Mr Prime Minister of Canada, for making me feel so old," she replied, to the outburst of her audience.

In 2016, the Queen greeted the deputy first minister of Ireland. When he asked, quite politely how she was, her response caught him somewhat off guard.

"Well, I'm still alive, anyway," the Queen told him.

How very, very British.
