Once again the Masters Soccer League provided an excellent example of the World Game as Busselton travelled to play Bunbury United.
While some Masters teams have tried to solely recruit experienced players, Busselton has gone out of its way to encourage new players into the game.
This policy is reaping rewards as on Sunday newcomers Brett (Tom Tom) Sheridan and Phil (Mario) Carson excelled in an exciting encounter.
Before this season neither had ever played a game of soccer but both are now creating problems for opposition teams.
Busselton dominated from the whistle and created chance after chance. Carson was creating havoc and could have scored three in the opening 15 minutes.
It took the experience of Bill Parsons to finally give Busselton their deserved lead – a looping shot from outside the box nestled in the Bunbury United net.
A disputed free kick on the edge of the box provided Bunbury with an avenue to goal which they duly took to level the scores.
Stuart Farmer then restored Busselton’s lead with another expert finish through the goalkeeper’s legs.
The half time score of 2-1 was flattering to Bunbury.
United started the second half brightly but Busselton’s confidence returned and they regained the upper hand.
They were creating chances almost at will but it took a powerful finish from Pete McClurg following a free-kick in the box to give them a 3-0 lead.
Carson then added a fourth following a corner.
At 4-1 Busselton relaxed and Bunbury showed great fight to score two quick goals to leave the game in the balance at 4-3.
However, Busselton calmed and in the final few minutes looked the more dangerous, creating a number of clear chances but spurning them all.
As well as Sheridan and Carson, there were great performances from Tristan Dowding, stand in keeper Andy Bee and James Thomas in an unfamiliar striker role.
