Nerilee Boshammer is running for council, saying she wants strong leadership and sustainable development to see Busselton thrive.
Ms Boshammer studied environmental management at university and says it is her passion.
“I have done a range of things, from grassroots (re-vegetation plans etc) to strategic engagement, cultural awareness workshops, to community engagement and much more.
“I would like to see our environment treated as fundamental, not just an extra, or something else we should work on, but a fundamental part of our infrastructure.”
Ms Boshammer ran for council two years ago and believes that the same issues still stand.
“I understand it is a tough gig, there as so many factors, different aspects, there is a lot to be considered.
“But we need transparency, it is key. It isn’t enough to say just come to the council meetings as for many people who work or have kids that just isn’t possible, and reading the minutes after don’t always give the full picture.
“If we want the community to be engaged and empowered in council decisions then we have to tell them, get them involved.”
Ms Boshmammer said Busselton’s population was growing at an incredible rate and she wants to see that we don’t just grow.
“It isn’t enough to just grow with the population, we have to thrive. We need to plan ahead, we need to have an idea of what we want our region to look like in the future.
“We need to balance community demands and tourism demands, we need to look at our traffic flow designs, our open spaces, our wildlife and so much more.” Ms Boshammer wants to see Busselton at the forefront of waste reduction.
“It is an issue that a lot of people feel passionately about, which is fantastic, I would like to see council lead the way. At the moment I feel the community is ahead of the council in many ways.”
Ms Boshammer said we need to reduce waste before we look at other recycling options.
“Reduce, re use and recycle in that order.”
