Vasse Primary School Year 4 student Rocco Watson has been named as the winning South West entry in the state-wide We Are 10 project.
The project involved more than 4000 10-year-old students, who created artworks and wrote a short statement on their views on life as they grow up in WA.
The entries have formed an exhibition, which marks the 10th anniversary of WA establishing a Commissioner for Children and Young People.
Rocco’s winning work was a picture of a man creating an invention and was accompanied by a quote from Rocco.
“Being 10 feels special because I’m growing up and have opportunities in life to invent,” it said.
“When I’m older, I’d like to construct a life-changing invention for the world.”
Commissioner Colin Pettit said it was fitting to mark the anniversary with the thoughts and hopes of thousands of young people, born the same year as the office was established.
“I received 528 responses from South West 10-year-olds, with many saying they participated in a wide range of leisure activities and greatly valued time spent outdoors with their family,” he said.
South West children also valued their growing independence and the natural environment.
The South West was one of only two regions where ‘family’ was the second most prominent theme.
The We Are 10 artworks are exhibited at the State Library of WA and on the large screen in the Perth Cultural Centre during the summer school holidays.
Local displays with artwork from students in the region are on display at Busselton Public Library, City of Busselton administration building and Naturaliste Community Centre, Dunsborough.
