Cape Naturaliste College student Jasmin Fussell has won silver at the WorldSkills National Championships in Sydney.
The 17-year-old student from Dunsborough went head-to-head with the best up and coming Australian tradespeople in the Food and Beverage category.
The Food and Beverage competition involved three days of service including a formal dinner, a high tea and designing a mocktail.
Jasmin said she was thrilled to receive the honour.
“It feels amazing, I was quite surprised,” she said.
“It is a great achievement and the competition was a lot of fun.”
More than 400 competitors from across the country vied for medals in 50 trade and skill categories.
Jasmin, a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETis) student, earned her place at the National Championships after a strong performance at the 2017 WorldSkills Australia Regional Competitions.
Last year, she completed a Certificate II in Hospitality at South Regional TAFE.
Jasmin, who works at Tas’s Bakery, said the win confirmed she was on the right path to make it in the hospitality industry.
“I definitely would love be involved industry in the future,” she said.
“I like that you can socialise with the public, meet people and hear their stories.
“It will also help me go on to travel and work in other places.”
She said she would recommend the VETiS pathway to other students.
“It really opens up your skills for the workplace,” she said.
“The program has been brilliant and has set me up for the long term.”
She credited her teachers and trainers for helping her reach the national stage.
“I’m very grateful to WorldSkills Australia for this opportunity, Alison and everyone at South Regional TAFE for their brilliant training over the past months leading up to the competition and to Cape Naturaliste College for the support and flexibility they have offered me throughout my training,” she said.
WorldSkills Australia CEO Brett Judd said events such as Skills Show Australia 2018 highlighted the diverse opportunities available to those pursuing a trade or skill.
“Choosing a vocational education and training path can open up some incredible and varied career opportunities,” he said.
