It has been a successful winter’s weekend in the pool for Busselton Swimming Club with the WA State Age Short Course Championships and the club’s annual Polar Bear Challenge falling on the same weekend.
Four members of the club Abbey Johnson, Eden MacDonald, Lucinda Jones and Rylee Williamson represented the club at the WA State Championships in Perth.
Each of the girls represented the club with pride and all achieved significant personal best times.
The club’s two breaststrokers, Abbey and Rylee both showed their speed, achieving personal bests in the 50 metre distance, along with multiple personal bests in other events.
Eden McDonald broke the elusive 30 second mark for her 50m freestyle recording a personal best of 29.45 seconds, as well as improving in her backstroke events.
To top off a great championship, Lucinda Jones achieved some huge personal best times taking out four bronze medals in the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle as well as the 100m backstroke.
Her performance was rewarded by selection in the WA team to attend the Interstate team championships in Canberra this October.
Back at Club headquarters on Friday, August 24 saw the annual Polar Bear Challenge with swimmers ranging from junior members and their parents, through to the masters.
Split into four teams, the challenge was to swim as far as they could in three hours while battling the cold.
The challenge was designed to be an exciting way to get members together and turned out to be an excellent night of socialising, eating and swimming.
A very close race was won by Angus Johnston-Walker’s team, his members included Anna Foley, Finlay Foley, Max Gray and Pat Gray, who swam a total distance of 10.95 kilometres.
The team narrowly defeated Maddy Johnston-Walker’s team, who were only 100m behind the leaders.
A special highlight was three members from the Currie family who went head-to-head against each other with Lara, Sienna and Jaz competing in different teams.
Busselton Swimming Club is working hard to provide a diverse range of swimming squads making swimming fun and inclusive for all.
The club is one of only two clubs in Australia which use the ‘one club’ model integrating juniors and masters swimming.
Members range from 8 to 80 years old.
If you are interested in joining in the fun please email registrar@busseltonswimmingclub.com.au for junior enquiries or masters@busseltonswimmingclub.com.au for masters enquiries.
