South West police personnel have asked community members and travellers all over the region to drive carefully during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
South West District Superintendent Mick Sutherland confirmed the region would be part of a state-wide traffic operation commencing at 12am on Thursday, September 20 and concluding at 12am on Monday, September 24.
“Combine the long weekend with the start of the school holidays and traffic to the South West increases significantly,” he said.
“The aim is to minimise the number of people involved in serious or fatal crashes and get all road users safely to and from their destinations.”
Superintendent Sutherland said police across the South West would target impaired driving caused by drugs and alcohol.
Police will also be targeting reckless/dangerous/careless driving, speeding, driving without a licence, the use of mobile phones behind the wheel, and the non-use of restraints/helmets.
“The traffic flow will be very heavy on all major roads and drivers are urged to take their time, be patient, and have regular breaks during their trip,” he added.
“Additionally, once they reach their destination, they should take care when travelling on unfamiliar roads.
“All drivers should take care when they are on the road at all times, regardless of where they are intending on travelling to.
“During holidays and long weekends, preparing yourself for a trip that may take up to an hour longer than normal is the best method to make the trip safer and more enjoyable.”
Mr Sutherland stressed the importance of reporting dangerous behaviour on the roads.
He said those who witness examples of dangerous driving should immediately report them to 000.
