Busselton’s Nerilee Boshammer has been announced as The Western Australian Greens candidate to contest the seat of Forrest in the upcoming federal election.
Ms Boshammer would be a familiar face to many, having contested the Warren Blackwood electorate in the 2013 election and for her work in environmental management throughout the region.
Ms Boshammer has lived in the South West for 15 years.
She told The Mail she was proud to have been selected by The Greens WA membership for the seat of Forrest.
“I am excited about the opportunity to give a voice to our community in politics, give back to the people of Forrest and act on the need for change this election,” she said.
“The Labor party, Liberals and even the Nationals say they care about our regions, yet for decades they’ve backed away from real support for local sustainable economic development and diversification, instead creating a system that prioritises the status quo and protects corporate interests.
“We need to protect our unique and precious natural attractions - such as Geographe Bay, Boranup Forest and the world-class surf beaches of Margaret River and Yallingup - while safeguarding our local economy and further building upon our reputation in sustainable tourism, agriculture and viticulture.
“Many of us in Forrest are worried that unsustainable and reactionary urban development is impacting on our natural landscape and water resources, displacing productive local agricultural land and placing impossible pressure on our healthcare, education and transport services.”
Senator Jordon Steele-John for WA welcomed and congratulated Ms Boshammer as The Greens candidate for Forrest.
“Nerilee is a fresh voice for the people of Forrest, who is able to speak up for the needs of the community without fear of offending or contradicting those in power,” he said.
“Having known and worked with her for many years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the determination and dynamism she will bring as your representative.
“I look forward to campaigning with her for a future where all of us can have what we need to live a good life.”
Current Forrest MP, Nola Marino has held the seat since 2007.
