It was a surprise for ATAR students throughout the state on December 16 when the results were released early.
The surprises didn’t end there for Georgiana Molloy Anglican School head boy and graduate Angus Jackson.
Angus, who was the school dux for 2018, was expecting to land in the late 90s, and was overjoyed to find out he scored 99.80 for his schooling efforts.
“I was surprised, the score superseded my expectations,” he said.
“I wanted anything over 98.
“I’m trying to get into the Bachelor of Philosophy Honours program and do an undergraduate in Engineering at UWA. As there is a limited positions in the Honours program, you need to get over 98. So based on previous years, I now have a fairly good chance.”
More than 11,000 WA students achieved an ATAR in 2018.
Seventeen students achieved the highest possible ATAR of 99.95.
The median ATAR was 81.80.
Angus said he made a conscious decision to knuckle down in his senior school years so he could achieve his goal.
“I don’t think I’m incredibly smart – I just decided to really commit to my studies,” he said.
“The key to success was just hard work.
“My plan is to go to uni next year, keep this momentum, and try not to lose motivation and become complacent.”
Angus was joined by fellow graduates Megan Weed and Corey Weir in the high achieving ranks.
Megan received 98.30 and Corey earned 97.45.
Angus praised his school and teachers for their support in his final year.
“They put in an incredible effort and their high quality of teaching is reflected in the great scores from our whole cohort,” he said.
The first round of university offers will be released on Friday, December 21.
