Men's Championship Pairs
The Bootleg Brewery Men’s Championship Pair was finalized at the Dunsborough Bowling club last Friday after being played in two stages.
Mike Brown and Geoff Oddy played against Ben Tas and Clive Williams for the title whilst on the rink next door Dennis Frost and novice player Gary Bell played against Merv Mott and Kelly Allsop for the plate title.
Played late in the afternoon for 17 ends it proved to be quite warm out there on the green until an hour or so into the match when the sea breeze arrived to help cool the situation.
In the championship game Brown and Oddy hit their straps early and at the end of round 15 the score was 17 – 8 with the spectators declaring a win for the team.
Tas and partner decided otherwise and on the next end with some skillful luck and touches they came away with four shots up and only three shots down on the last end.
This was a tense and interesting last end with much cheering from the crowd who had gathered on the verandah of the clubhouse to witness the two games.
Both skips knew they were capable of the win, but it was the Brown team who prevailed with just one shot and came out the winners with score ending up as 18-12.
“Just too good for us” said Ben Tas at the end of the game whilst Mike Brown replied, “we came away lucky in the end”.
In the plate final Gary Bell showed his intentions when the novice championships are held early in the new year. He was very efficient in his support to skip Dennis Frost and kept his cool under pressure from the effervescent champion Allsop.
At the 11th end the score was tied but in the next two played the Frost team scored 5. Although Mott picked up three on the second last end it was not sufficient enough, and the Frost team came out on top 17-13.
