The Dunsborough Bowling Club hosted a major event to kick-start their 2020/21 bowling season last Sunday.
The 2019/20 Leeuwin League Champion of Champions was rescheduled from last March because of the COVID-19 interruption to the season.
Thus, for the first time the end of one season was actually the start of the next.
In near perfect conditions the four clubs in the Leeuwin League, players put on a showcase of talent from the novice right through to the team champions.
Despite having to wait months for the event all competitors were keen to battle.
League President Keith Simmonds commented on the excellent condition of the Dunsborough greens and the flag was dropped for a tussle between the different champions.
From the outset club Augusta flexed its muscle and put everyone on notice that they they had come to be the champion club.
As expected the contest within each division was exceptionally close with some games going down to the wire to determine the winner.
It was a long day, eventually concentration and grit would prove the difference between players.
Augusta demonstrated that their teams had what was needed and came out the champion club with 40 points followed by Margaret River.
Augusta player Owen Rafferty won the prestigious singles championship title after winning two of his three games and finishing the day on six points and plus five shots.
Runner-up was Margaret River's Smiler Gayle also on six points but with a minus five shots score.
The Dunsborough Bowling Club lifted the roof with a mighty cheer when their very own Gary Bell was announced as the novice champion for the day.
Months earlier Bell had travelled to Perth to compete in the novice champion of champions where he finished in a credible third place.
Fellow clubman Brian Logan was extremely unlucky not to win the League Veterans title with two wins and going down in the game against Augusta by just one shot.
