The Reading family have generously donated a parcel of land at Lot 174 Kaloorup Road to the Vasse community.
The land is located behind the Vasse Hall and was originally part of the "church" block which has been owned by the Reading family since the late 1950's.
The land had mostly been used by the Vasse community.
The Reading family, Robert, Dorothy and Ross were farmers in the area and had originally gifted this portion of land in 1958 for community purposes.
However, due to many extraordinary circumstances over the years, including the death of Robert Reading and years later, the death of his wife Dorothy, this valuable donation was not completed until 2020.
Ross Reading said the land was originally owned by the Anglican Church which intended to build a boy's school on the site.
"When the Anglican Church were raising money to build the cathedral in Bunbury they sold the church block, which mum, dad and I bought in 1958," he said.
"It was very rare, and still is, that a son was made partner at such a young age, I was only 18 years old.
"Part of that block was next to the town hall, we just thought it was a good idea to give it to the community.
"We are absolutely delighted to give the land to the community, it has come and gone over the years as you could imagine.
"At one stage I got a big rate bill for it and at the moment I have a land tax bill.
"We are absolutely delighted it is finally finished.
"My wife Kate's persistence over the last three years made this happen, she worked extraordinarily hard and diligently to make it happen."
At an event hosted by the City of Busselton, mayor Grant Henley acknowledged Robert and Dorothy Reading, their children and grandchildren, for generously gifting the parcel of land.
Mr Henley said it was very rare and the first as a mayor and councillor, to witness and honour such a valuable donation to the community.
"The gifting of this land is a real demonstration of selfless community spirit that has been a work in progress for over 60 years," he said.
"Ross, Kate and Susanne - you have been instrumental in honouring your father and mother's verbal wish to see this parcel of land gifted to the community.
"This community spirited donation has now been formally vested in the City of Busselton and the land will be kept in perpetuity for the use of the Vasse community.
"On behalf of the City and its community, we sincerely thank you for this significant and generous gift."
