WONNERUP residents have asked the City of Busselton councillors to become “better informed” about the coastal erosion threatening their homes.
At Wednesday night’s agenda meeting Wonnerup resident Jay Hughes asked for details about how the erosion is being monitored.
City of Busselton chief executive officer Mike Archer said the city did not want to see any properties go under water but it wasn’t the city’s responsibility.
“The Department of Transport has got deeper pockets than the city, they are now dealing with the issue,” Mr Archer said.
Mr Hughes said the issue affected a large amount of rate payers so it was important councillors understood what was happening.
“I would like to know where the Department of Transport has their monitoring stations and look at some of the data collected so we can see what we are dealing with,” Mr Hughes said.
City of Busselton property management coordinator Sharon Woodford-Jones said she had requested data from the department four weeks ago but was yet to receive it.
Councillor Tom Tuffin asked when the city had last looked at the data.
“I think this information should be made available to us,” Cr Tuffin said.
Councillor Rob Bennett said residents should be contacting Vasse MP Libby Mettam.
Ms Mettam said at the moment the Department of Transport were seeking advice from coastal engineers and the University of Western Australia who were carrying out research into the appropriate response to the erosion.
"The information we have been provided with from these professionals so far is that the erosion will resolve itself in the next three years," she said.
The Department of Transport general manager Steve Jenkins said they had been doing surveys since March 2015 but were not ready to release any data.
