THIS weekend will see the 31st Yallingup Malibu Classic competed.
Started in 1985 by a “bunch of fun locals” the contest has grown from grassroots to a major event on the state surfing calendar.
Surfers from as far away as Geraldton to Albany are set to attend this year’s event which caters for all age groups from juniors to over 65s.
Local surfer Justin Redman, who has won the event 10 times, will contest the open men’s division while the evergreen Bob Monkman will no doubt be a threat in the over 60s.
Indian Ocean Longboard Club women’s champion Amanda Curley will contest the women’s title along with the club’s junior champion Chelsea Bedford.
The Lindsay Thompson Memorial Teams trophy will again be hotly challenged with the Joy Boys consisting of Lindsay's sons and mates from Margaret River installed as firm favourites.
Hosted again by the Indian Ocean Longboard Club the contest runs over Saturday and Sunday, with a stomp on Saturday night and the presentations on Sunday afternoon at Caves House.
Spectators are invited to the contest which will showcase Western Australia’s best Longboard surfers in a pristine, prestigious location.
