GEOGRAPHE Bay Football Club Ladies team took on local rivals Dunsborough in the quarter final of the League Cup in the first home game in a few weeks.
A lack-lustre start again this week saw the Seasiders go down by a goal in the first 10 minutes.
The team fought off some smart attacks from Dunsborough, and with many great chances, eventually hit back through Elisha Saltarini with five minutes to go to half-time.
An excellent build up from Ashlee Hollett put Saltarini in for a one-on-one which she coolly slotted into the net.
Two minutes later Hollett had a great chance of her own but shot high with an over zealous crack at goal. The score was 1-1 at half-time.
A refocused team delivered in the first five minutes of the second half through a well taken goal by young gun Chenaye Wright. The Seasiders keeper Sarah Hollett belted out a pass which made its way to the forward line where Wright pounced on it, giving Geo a narrow 2-1 lead.
Unfortunately shortly after this, the hardworking centre midfielder Brooke O’Connor had to be stretchered off injured. This unsettled the team but they bound together and set other young gun Samantha Baillie up for the first of two well taken goals.
Therese Charlton stepped into the midfield and quickly found possession, then slipped in a sneaky cross from the right to Baillie who beat a defender and slotted it past the keeper.
The Seasiders’ rampage continued and it was Wrights’ turn again when after leaving her defender behind, found herself well positioned in the six-yard box and on the end of another Charlton cross.
The play seesawed back and forth for the last 15 minutes until Baillie broke free again from her defender in Geo’s half and with only the Dunsborough keeper to beat, slotted home her second to seal the win at 5-2.
In the last few minutes the Seasiders lined up for a corner. Ashlee Hollett whipped the corner in and it appeared defender Ness O’Callaghan had scored a fabulous header. As the team celebrated O’Callaghan found herself on the receiving end of a yellow card for an infamous ‘Hand of God’. Christian & Co Electrical Contractors Player of the Day was awarded to Samantha Bailee.
The Seasiders have earned the right to play in the Premier League for the second half of the season for the first time in the club’s history.
This milestone means they will be looking to field a Reserve and League side next season so if you are after fun and fitness visit gbfc.com.au.
Next week the Seasiders will be travelling away to take on top of the table leaders Eaton-Dardanup.
