"It's not for any old person to have a crack at. It's pretty insane."
That's the stark warning from Kimberley film maker Chris Magnay after he shot video of professional kayaker Lachie Carracher taking on the man-made spillway rapids of WA's Lake Argyle.
But before we get into it, it's very important to know that the area is restricted due to the extremely dangerous nature of the water, and anyone found inside the clearly marked zone can be charged by police with trespassing.
Heavy wet season rains have swelled the lake far beyond its usual size and all of that extra water is cascading down the spillway in a fast flowing rumble - which Mr Carracher decided to risk having a go at.
"He spent a good 45 minutes looking at it, deciding what his route down would be," Mr Magnay said.
"He's a professional - he's been doing this more than ten years so he knows what he's doing and the risk - you're on your own out here if anything goes wrong.
"And just standing there, the waves are as tall as you are, it's really rough and fast and you don't get a sense of that in the video. It's pretty hairy!"
Mr Carracher paddles hard into the rapids and at one point gets swamped in the wash only to make a quick recovery.
And reaching the calm waters at the end he raises his paddle into the air, saluting the intense water he just survived.
"He wanted to do two runs through but after that first one he was so stoked that he said it was enough," Mr Magnay said.
The Melbourne-based kayaker is no stranger to WA's wild north - in 2011 over five nights he paddled 400 kilometres from Mount Barnett Station to Fitzroy Crossing.
This time he was repeating some of the journey with a group of friends, and contacted Mr Magnay out of the blue to come film his exploits at the spillway.
"The spillway is really firing after all the rains and he must have heard. But it's not for everyone. He is a professional. People have kayaked it before and on rafts and things like that but I wouldn't want to see people taking it on.
"You have to know what you're doing."
The Water Corporation's North West Regional Manager, Rino Trolio has reminded the community not to enter the restricted zone near the Kununurra Diversion Dam.
"People are not permitted on the Ord River itself or its banks within the restricted zone because of the risk posed by the fast-flowing water," Mr Trolio said.
"Signs and marker buoys clearly mark the restricted zone, which includes the entire Kununurra Diversion Dam wall and sections of river extending 100 metres upstream and 200 metres downstream of the dam wall.
"People who choose to jump the fence and stand or fish on the banks of the river can easily be swept into the turbulent water.
"We do not want any member of the community, whether they are fishing or simply sightseeing, to put themselves at risk."
Water Corporation will refer people found inside the restricted zone to the police, who have the authority to charge offenders with trespassing.
