Vandals tore through Barnard Park late on Friday night with a vehicle or vehicles causing extensive damage to the sports grounds.
It appears the culprits entered the oval from the Geographe Road carpark and commenced churning up the turf, said City of Busselton chief executive officer Mike Archer.
Extensive damage was caused to both ovals, which are used by the cricket, rugby and soccer clubs for training and competition.
Mr Archer said some of the cut marks were exceptionally deep and extensive patching would be needed which could take four to six weeks to repair.
“This vandalism would be a major blow for these clubs, particularly cricket as the summer season commences,” he said.
“Obviously this is very disappointing – particularly as we embark upon the summer sports season and we are only weeks away from the opening of the new Barnard Park Sports Pavilion.
“As a community we have invested significantly in the development of a district level sporting precinct on the foreshore and to see the playing fields so stupidly ripped to bits is completely unacceptable.
“We are really hoping that someone knows something and is prepared to pass this information on to the police and that those responsible can be charged.”
