Now in full swing, Busselton Tennis Centre, home of the Busselton Tennis Club is proving to be a dynamic draw card for new members, holiday makers, interstate players, junior and WA open players alike, pushing the club's annual BTC Club handicap competition to be played over an unusually lengthy period from November 2019 - February 2020. BTC's tennis captain Allison Hutchison, along with vice captains Maureen McDaniell and Sue Thomas were instrumental in the success of the competition.
In the Mixed Handicap Doubles (November 23), two pools of players played Round Robins in warm conditions, with everyone exhibiting great sportsmanship qualities. Pool A winners: Tara Doyle / Lyndon Booth (22 games / 3 wins); Runners-up: Rosa McGillivray / Kevin Wren (20 games); Alison Kirk / Tony Schilders (19 games); Great matches: Alison / Tony's win 6 - 5 (7/5) over Rosa / Kevin; Kathryn O'Connor / Paul Vegh's win 6 - 4 over Tara / Lyndon; Pool B winners: Ingrid Windsor / Simon Chae (24 games / 4 wins); Runners-up: Leonie Don / Paul Gunning (21 games); Juliane Garland / Andrew O'Neil (19 games).
In the Women's and Men's Handicap Doubles (December 8) there were some close results in the women's and all combinations had a good chance of winning the day. In the final round Merryl Peet and Judy Davy were up against Leonie Don and Ali Cunningham. Each pair had two wins, so the final match determined the winner. Leonie and Ali won 6/5 (7-3).
The Men's two round robins saw some excellent partnerships. In Round Robin A Geoff Pearce and Lyndon Booth smiled early on with good wins over Simon Chae and Dennis Schram 6/4. Paul Gunning and Garry MacDonald 6/3 and Kevin Wren and Bernie Masters 6/3. Allen Christie and Paul Vegh had a marathon match against Kevin and Bernie winning 6/5 (14-12).
The result of Pool A was extremely close with three pairs on the same number of sets each and 21 games won. A countback of games against then determined the final result. Geoff and Lyndon had 16 games against (3rd) Allen and Paul Vegh 15 games against (2nd) Paul Gunning and Garry MacDonald 14 against (1st). Round Robin B: Another tight event. At the end of the round Fred LaRose / Rob Lennox had 22 games, Jim Davies / Jeremy Williams 23 and Andrew O'Neil / Barry Jones 24.
In the Men's Handicap Singles (February 16) David Triffitt played off against Andrew O'Neil in the finals with David winning 6-5 (8-6) in a fiercely contested wounded warrior-like, both leg injured, tie-break match.
