The Yallingup Boardriders have turned back the clock to the 1970’s during last Saturday for their annual Single Fin Theory contest. This year’s 19th event was greeted with absolutely perfect conditions at Injidup carpark with a big 3 metre groundswell sweeping into the bay and offshore winds keeping it clean all day.
Local legend and big wave devotee, Paul ‘Antman’ Patterson showed he is also handy on the old school boards by tearing apart the fun right-handers to lift the winning trophy with his victorious first place. Coming in second place was a showy Marty ‘MC Hammer’ Chandler who guided his board through the curl and slashed apart any open wave faces in his path. In third place was Queenslander James ‘Bootscooter’ Brown who scored a specialty invite to the contest because he won the equivalent Burleigh Boardriders event.
Each winner of their single fin contests are invited to the other club’s event each year, so Antman will be representing Yallingup next year. Rounding out the finals and placing fourth was Matt ‘I wish I had a better nickname than Wisey’ Wiseman. Wisey’s knowledgeable rides helped him make the prestigious final.
The icing on the cake each year is not only the retro fashion sense or bushy moustaches but also the famous prize draw, where any surfer in the competition gets a chance at winning a custom 70’s Single Fin Replica Surfboard by Chapstar valued at $1000.
This year, the Chapstar Surfboard was taken home by an elated Tommy Trigwell, who celebrated with fellow competitors at the Caves House presentation. Next year the event will celebrate it's 20th year which is promising to be a special day for the Single Fin Theorists.
Forecast: Clean offshore winds from the ESE on Thursday and E on Friday with a very fun 1.6m swell will round out the week. There will be more offshore winds on Saturday with a 1.4m swell and a SSE change on Sunday but a bigger 2m swell.
