Busselton Senior High School former year 12 student Elle Sewell finished 2014 with an excellent ATAR mark of 94 but it was her External Visual Art mark of a perfect 100 per cent that was both rare and outstanding.
Elle painted two large oil portraits during the year using a skilled broken brush technique indicative of the impressionist movement.
Both resolved pieces received outstanding commendations and her portrait of Indigenous icon Lingari was selected to be a part of this year’s prestigious Perspectives Exhibition.
This exhibition showcases visual art excellence from selected Year 12 students and commences at the Art Gallery of Western Australia on March 10.
Elle said when she found out the result she rolled around on the floor screaming with excitement.
“It took me a full year to complete the two assignments and both feature important elderly men in my life,” Elle said.
“Lingari was a very powerful indigenous figure and the second portrait is my granfather who relayed very powerful stories to me as a child.
“I was always very excited to see him when I was young, he was somebody who I looked up to.”
Before studying Fine Arts at Curtin University, Elle is spending this year working at the City of Busselton as a trainee Youth Development Officer.
