The 18s Busselton Magpies team got off to a flying start on Sunday against the Eaton Boomers with a strong attack side being led by pocket rocket Phoebe Pethybridge.
They finished the first quarter with a nine-goal lead which was increased to 23 goals by half-time with the amazing defensive hands by Teniele Smith.
Ivy Golding had a strong game, turning over offensive passes which gave the Magpies a boost. The Magpies did not stop in the third quarter finishing 61-29.
Magpies Reserves showed the measure and discipline of a champion side to take a 46-41 win against the Boomers. Meg Bolton brought plenty of speed in centre, with goal attack Beth Beckett opening up holes in the Eaton circle defence for Steph Millen for a 11-10 first term.
Phoebe Pethybridge in wing attack for the second converted turnover work from defender Clair Ganault and Teniele Smith with a clever feed for a 26-18 lead.
There were major changes from Boomers with Alicia Golik and Rachel Rodgers tasked with applying strong defence to Beckett and Millen. Bolton withstood tough contest from centre Danika Wellington. Yas Riley and Shukia Riley were challenged by goal attack Tanya Sims, the Boomers surged to within five goals into the last term.
It was a tense final term with every Magpie player answering runs of Boomers momentum with clean tight defensive work, intercepts and balanced attacking. Captain Ash Farmer in wing defence wore down the Boomer options, while Millen put her body on the line for strong takes.
Magpies League team had a comfortable win against a spirited Boomers side. The Boomers moved the ball with plenty of pace and fed well to their tall shooter, which kept them in touch with the Magpies in the first quarter.
With their noses barely in front at quarter time, score 16-12, Magpies moved Riley Culnane back to keeper to counter the height difference - this combined with tight wing defence pressure from Ash Farmer - led to valuable turnovers.
Magpies capitalised with sharp delivery to the shooting circle via Harmony Sutherland and the hardy Tenieka Handley. Ball control from Maia Bratten and delivery to Emma Borinelli saw Busselton dominate the second quarter, heading into half-time at 18-34.
Magpies held Eaton to four goals in the third term. Eaton were determined in the final quarter, finishing the game with persistence, but the Magpies pushed through to win 66-29.
