"Hello Newman" the popular Jerry Seinfeld line made connections happy on Monday at Pinjarra when the three-year-old Rig from Grinfromeartoear returned from a spell in stylish fashion. After a nice trial return at Bunbury a week earlier Newman wasn't forgotten in betting when the youngster was sent out third favourite at 5 to 1 for reinsman Lorne Steer, the man with a hairdo like Tom Baker from Dr Who with just a few more grey strands, had Newman behind the leader throughout; and entering the final stretch Steer dashed the talented horse up the sprint lane to grab Stop The Watch late to win by a metre.
Falling Starzz returned to owner Reece Kaptein's stable and at her second run back produced the goods when winning at Bunbury on Saturday night. She was sent out a $4.80 chance and settled last of the eight starters, but with 700m to run reinsman Dylan Egerton-Green crept quietly around the field before launching the mare on the leaders to run away to win by a length.
My Love Letters is having a good July with a win three starts back and now a third placing on Monday from the tough draw of barrier 10. Driver Chris Lewis had the filly racing worse than midfield, but she came with a sprinted burst late and did look the winner; but just peeked on the run late to finish close up, only beaten by 1.7m.
The Barry Howlett stable also place third on Saturday night with Smart Fortune which looked to be the run of the night. After starting from barrier 10 reinsman Aaron Beckett made a mid race move to try and settle outside the leader, but that was unsuccessful and he had to drag to colt back to the end of the field. Smart Fortune battled hard again at the end of the race running home into third.
Sammys Ideal continues to race in great form coming from well back and giving favourite Pradas Ideal Dahling a massive start, but Sammy made up considerable ground nearly running the favourite down. Bettor Go Bolt returned to trials after a lengthy break for trainer Kym Neal and the 8yo gelding ran third coming home in slick time.
